1. What is a multimedia CD-ROM title?
A multimedia CD-ROM title consists of a series of content which does not consist of only text but also video, audio, graphics, stills and many more. They can be run on any computering software which has a CD drive and a sound card. With this, the user can interact with the content on the CD-ROM and it becomes a interactive experience for them.
2. What are some application of CD-ROM title design? Eg. Educational. Bring examples, if any.
One fruitful experience I had when I was around 6 to 7 years old was when my mom bought me a Kidsoft educational typing CD-ROM game to sort of improve my knowledge towards the computer. Basically the game teaches you to type fast, properly and correctly, with the visual aids of a cartoonish ghost who supposedly is your mentor, and it monitors your learning rate and speed.
It has good navigation, which allows and enables the user to go back to the stage where they previously stopped at, so that they do not have to start all over again or play non stop to improvise and unlock new levels of the game. They also have a clear toolbar which allows the user to stop, start, exit, replay, go back, move on and many more. The pop-up labels tell the user what each button does, which gives good indication and gives the user clear instructions for them to understand.
3. What are the differences between website design and CD-ROM title design?
The main difference is basically the size of each design. A website design works best with the maximum capacity space of less than 250kb or so, whereas for a CD-ROM title design, the allocated maximum space is around 700mb. Comparing with the two sizes, we can see that using a CD-ROM title design would be more appealing to designers who wishes to work with no size limit constraint. With 250kb, we constantly have to optimize our images in order not to allow slow loading time which in turn can frustrate visitors of our site, but however with 700mb, it allows a lot more space and a lot more freedom with what the designers want to do. It allows us to be more creative with our content, such as putting in music, images and a lot more flash stuff for the user to interact with to let them have a memorable interactive experience.
In conclusion, working for a CD-ROM title design is much more appealing than working for a website design because of the space issues.
